Letitia Ann “Tish” James (born October 18, 1958) is an American lawyer, activist, and politician. She is a Democrat who was elected to succeed appointed Attorney General Barbara Underwood as New York’s Attorney General in 2018.
She is the position’s first African-American and female occupant. After graduating from Lehman College in The Bronx, James went on to receive her J.D. at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
She began her career as a public defender, then as a member of the staff of the New York State Assembly, and then as a New York State Assistant Attorney General (Brooklyn Regional Office).
James served on the New York City Council from 2004 to 2013. In the 35th Congressional District, she represented the Brooklyn communities of Clinton Hill, Fort Greene, and sections of Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, and Bedford-Stuyvesant.
James was a member of a number of committees, including the Economic Development and Sanitation Committees. She later served as New York City’s Public Advocate from 2013 to 2018.
She was the first African-American woman elected to serve as Public Advocate in New York City. In the 2022 election, James ran for governor of New York.
She declared her candidacy on October 29, 2021, and then resigned on December 9, 2021, to seek for re-election as attorney general.

James was a public defender for the Legal Aid Society and the founder of the Urban Network, a collaboration of African-American professional organizations dedicated to awarding scholarships to young people.
She was a member of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo’s Judiciary Diversity Task Force. She was Albert Vann’s lawyer, Roger L. Green’s Chief of Staff in the New York State Assembly, and New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer’s chief of staff.
She was appointed as the first Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Brooklyn regional office in 1999. James served in a variety of capacities while in that position, with a particular emphasis on consumer complaints regarding predatory lending and other illegal company practices.
